The 2025 BMW M2 is undoubtedly a beautiful car and say what you want about the front grille, the more and more I see the M2 in person, the more it grows on me. When talking about BMW and its current offerings amongst friends, those conversations tend to lean more towards the older BMW models like the M3 (E46), M5 (E39), or the M3 (E92). These older models delivered a sense of being in control, a rawness unmatched by modern vehicles. I guess the common factor here is all these vehicles mentioned above were built in the late 1990s to the early 2000s. However, after recently experiencing a BMW 335xi (E92) coupe and the M2 (F87) coupe. I will go on record saying that the M2 model is not only a modern classic, but it is also BMW's last driver-focused model.

Ever since the release of the first generation M2 (F87) at the North American International Auto Show, I've been a fan of the M2, specifically for having a curb weight of less than 4,000 ibs, for reference the BMW M5 (E39) had a curb weight range from 3,307-4,068 ibs.

BMW

The (F87) M2 was powered by a 3.0-liter turbo straight-six, rated at 365 hp and 343 lb-ft of torque. The M2 was offered with a 6-speed manual transmission or 7-speed DCT, most importantly the F87 was only available as a rear-wheel drive coupe–which to me, was BMW's way of rekindling customer's interest in M-power vehicles, after years of making cars heavier and offering limited transmission options.

The new 2025 M2 has the same 3.0-liter inline-six engine, now rated at 460 horsepower and 406 ib-ft, allowing for enough power to navigate both city streets and winding mountain roads with ease. Pointing out the obvious, especially in the current car market, spending close to $80,000 for a coupe is not cheap, for the same amount you can purchase a Toyota Supra 3.0, which also has a 3.0-liter inline-six engine, 6-speed manual, and is rear-wheel drive. Both coupes are for the purist, offering a finely tuned chassis, rear-wheel drive dynamics, and optional manual transmission for those who prefer a more hands-on approach.

Over the weekend, while I was on a coffee run, I saw a stunning G87 M2 in Zandvoort Blue parked in Flatbush, Brooklyn. This sighting inspired me to write this article. With the release of the latest version of the M2, I've been spending an excessive amount of time on BMW's configurator, trying to create my dream spec.

BMW

Exterior Paint: Skyscraper Grey Metallic ($650) Originally I selected Black Sapphire Metallic a stunning color in person. The only drawback is that within 10 minutes of getting your car detailed it will look dirty again, the same problem applies to Alpine White. Skyscraper Grey Metallic is much lighter than Black Sapphire Metallic but darker than Brooklyn Grey Metallic, a popular color option for BMW along with Audi's Nardo Grey.

Interior Color and Trim: For the interior, we selected Black Vernasca leather with Blue Contrasting Stitching. A close friend of mine previously leased a 2024 BMW X5 30i in Alpine white with Black Vernasca, a premium option on that model, which I had the opportunity to spend some time with. In-person, Black Vernasca leather offers a premium feeling cabin. The leather is applied to the front and rear seats, armrest, and interior door handles–entering any vehicle with this option offers a noticeably different level of luxury than say, BMW's Sensatec Black, the brand's vegan-friendly option.

We also optioned the Fine Brushed Aluminum Interior Trim for the M2, a no-cost option that matches in tone with the grey exterior color option, providing the perfect contrast against the black leather sport seats

BMW

Wheels & Tire Package: We selected the 19/20" M Dual-Spoke Bicolor 930M Wheels with staggered Michelin Pilot Sports 4S, a no-cost option. The M Dual-Spoke Bicolor 930M Wheels offer a nice contrast to the Skyscraper Grey metallic paint. Additionally, the open-spoke style allows for easy maintenance, while the Pilot Sports 4S tires offer enough grip on the street.

BMW

Exterior Options: We option the Lighting package ($650) equipped with an adaptive LED headlight for an enhanced nighttime experience, to further enhance the exterior of our M2 build, the lighting package also includes the M Shadowline Lights, which darkens the headlight internals for a more aggressive look.

BMW

Packages & Performance Options: With the 6-speed manual pre-selected and plenty more options to choose from, we added the M Driver's Package ($2,500) with some key extras including an increase in top speed, from 155 mph to 177 mph, Carbon Roof, M Traction Control, and the M Active Differential for a more planted road feeling when navigating the twists or to change the suspension characteristics for a smoother highway drive.

As for maintenance, please note that all new BMW vehicles come with the base BMW Ultimate Care. This maintenance program will last for 3 years/36,000 miles (whichever comes first). As a proud do-it-yourself kind of guy, wrenching on my vehicles is like meditation; within one year of ownership, I will have enough knowledge to perform my routine maintenance or take it to a local trusted shop for a repair beyond my expertise.

Total Cost: $76,025 (Base Price: $68,200)

This is based on a 2025 BMW M2 Coúpe with the six-speed manual, M Driver's Package, and Lighting Package. The cost reflects the Base MSRP, the equipment price ($6,000), and Delivery, Processing, and Handling Fees ($1,175).
