AI POLICY

Generative Artificial Intelligence also referred to as “GenAI” is a type of artificial intelligence (AI) system capable of generating text, images, or other media in response to prompts. Generative models learn the patterns and structure of the input data, and then generate new content that is similar to the training data but with some degree of novelty rather than only classifying or predicting data.

Natural language processing tools like ChatGPT have brought GenAI into the mainstream, affecting the way we generate online content everywhere. In this policy we’ve outline our position with regards to GenAI and how and when we use it. As of writing this policy GenAI in the public domain is still in its infancy and ever evolving. We are not GenAI expert.

How and when We use GenAI

  • All long form content on this website and on my social media accounts (Instagram, YouTube,) is human-generated. I do not use GenAI to write the content of my blog articles, newsletters, or any of the pages on my website.

  • Occasionally we use Squarespace’s AI (BETA) to help me generate SEO friendly headlines and taglines. This tool uses built-in algorithms to determine a headline and SEO score.

  • Occasionally we use GenAI to brainstorm content ideas and topics. For instance, we will ask ChatGTP to give me five paragraphs on a topic and then I use those as a starting point for structuring a article, which we then write using my own words, based on our own learnings and experience.

  • AI technology is here to stay and we do believe in embracing it to support us without compromising the authenticity of our own voice and humanity. AI does not replace our own skills, knowledge and experience and we will continue to learn and educate in our own field of expertise, so to share and teach content that is genuine and based on human experience.

GenAI and SEO

It is important to remember that Google “rewards high quality content, however it is produced” but it is also very clear that “when it comes to automatically generated content, our guidance has been consistent for years. Using automation—including AI—to generate content with the primary purpose of manipulating ranking in search results is a violation of our spam policies.” (from Google’s policy written in February 2023)

Our approach to content creation has always been focused on producing high quality, well researched and thoughtful content that is helpful for our audience. Nothing changes here and we will continue to use our own writing when pertaining to long-form content.

100% Human

The AI genie is out of the bottle and here to stay, and we will have to learn to co-exist. But let us never forget that AI is a machine and no-matter how well it learns to become more “human” as it advances, it will always be a wired metal box in a warehouse of computers. As of writing this policy there is a lot of speculation as to the long-term effects of AI, its regulation, its dangers, its positive life-changing potential, e.g. in the medical field.

Furthermore, there are still many issues around GenAI inaccuracies, misinformation and plagiarism. Which makes me even more determined to be mindful of how we use GenAI.
